To our new parents, welcome to ESH!
First Day of School – Wednesday 4 September 2019, 08:30 - 12:45
We are looking forward to seeing you again or meeting some of you for the first time. It's a big day for your children and we are getting ready to make it a happy, comfortable and welcoming start to their school days with us.
Welcome Coffee / Tea: On Wednesday the 4th of September, all parents are invited to have a cup of coffee or tea in the atrium for a meet and greet after you have brought your child(ren) to their class. The middle management team and various administration staff are happy to meet you and willing to answer any ESH related questions until approximately 10:30am.
- The walk in for this day will be from 08:30-09:00 (instead of the usual 08:30 -08:45).
- Staff and Management of the ESH will be welcoming new and returning pupils to start the new school year
- The school day ends at 15:00 every day, except for Wednesdays, when it ends at 12:45.
There will be no Mother Tongue, Second Language or Specialist lessons on the first day of school; these will start from Thursday the 5th of September onwards. Swimming lessons for P2 will start from the second week of school.
From the second week of school (16 September), children in Primary 1- 5 are expected to go to their classes without their parents. This will decrease the congestion and traffic inside the school.
Keep in mind...
Badges: As part of our commitment to security, we ask you to please remember to wear your parent ID badges to enter the school. New parents who have already ordered badges can collect this in front of the school on the morning of the first school day. If you haven’t ordered a badge yet, please register at the reception for a temporary badge. We will order your permanent badges during the first weeks of school and inform you when they are ready.
Parking: If you drive to school, we ask that you be extra vigilant for pedestrian and cyclist traffic during the first weeks. In particular the first day of school is intense with movement from all directions! Our traffic controllers wear yellow vests and will coordinate the traffic every day, so please follow their instructions. Please note the enclosed parking-lot, adjacent to the school, is for staff members only.
Drop off and Pick Up: Due to the Construction work at ESH, we have a slightly different procedure. We ask parents with children in EY, P1 and P2 to use the small gate at the Early Years playground (gate at the right of the main entrance). Parents of children in P2 - P5, please use the main entrance gate (leading to reception area). See our updated construction page here.
Bikes: If you will be bringing your child(ren) to school by bike, these can be parked in the designated parking area on the parking lot or in front of the Early Years Entrance.
Parent Information Evenings:
At ESH we consider parents our partners in education. Parents are the first and continuing educators of their children. And we encourage parents to spend time talking to their children about their social, academic and extra-curricular activities. With this in mind...
We invite all parents to attend a valuable information evening with your child's teacher. This is also a chance to meet the other parents in your child's class and learn more about the year ahead. Please grab a pen, preferably a RED pen and save these dates:
Tuesday 24th of September for Early Years and P1 parents and on the
Thursday 26th of September for P2-P5 parents.
Timetables will be distributed at the first parent information evening.
We also request parents volunteer as "Class Representatives" on this information evening. More information about these sessions will be sent beforehand and can be found in the school guide, on the website.
School Guide / Handbook / Calendar
Our School Guide 2019-2020 will be available to download from September and the start of the school year via the school website www.europeanschoolthehague.nl (scroll down to the bottom of the page). The school guide provides parents with information about the ESH, so if you have queries please refer to the 2019 school guide for an answer.

Communication at ESH
At ESH, we are committed to engaging in open communication with parents. To this end, the school has a number of channels of communication with parents, starting with email. (Therefore, please be sure our administration team have your correct email address).
Very soon, our school will adopt an innovative new communications and community App called "Social Schools". This will help connect you to your teacher, the class and the school. All important announcements, class news, events, parent teacher conferences, your child's absence, etc. will be communicated via this App. We will roll out the implementation of "Social Schools" from September 18th.
For instructional questions, please speak to your child's class teacher. Please refer to the school guide to direct you for any operational questions.
Sickness / Absence
For September only, please use this email firstname.lastname@example.org to inform us about your child's absence (illness, doctor appointments). In this email, clearly indicate the name and surname of your child as well as their class in the subject. If you are not able to send an email, please call the reception before 08:30 on (070)700-1600. After September, we will use the "Social Schools" App to record absences. More information will follow.

How can parents participate and help build the ESH community?
As we mentioned, at ESH we consider parents our partners in education. We need your positive support as the school grows and adapts to the changing environment. We ask parents for your support in a number of ways, here are a few:
Keep connected to us: read the newsletters and school announcements. Become a Class Representative or support your Class Rep. Volunteer to accompany children on excursions. Help organize events (eg: European coffee Mornings / Cake Sales). Give helpful feedback to staff. Assist with class or school celebrations and parties. Keep talking to your children. Attend the monthly parent education presentations in the "Treffit" Parent Cafe. Participate in formal consultative bodies, such as the Participation Council (PC). Parents are also invited to join other committees, including the Parent Teacher Association (PTA), focus-groups, a canteen committee and just to get involved in other school activities when invited.
We look forward to a ESHtraordinary year ahead with you and your children!
Eugene Voorneman (Deputy Director Primary) and Carma de Groot (Assistant Deputy Director)
Montse Florez will be the interim Assistant Deputy Director from 1 September to end of December 2019 as Mrs de Groot goes on parental leave.
